29 Oct 2016- Counter 2016, Art Book Fair, Plymouth.
A great art book fair created by artists Maddy and Paul Hearn of Pineapple Falls and the Wonderful Grotto. This was a wonderful grotto of lovely made books, interesting conversations, and an idea generator.
I attended three fantastic talks, each very different, just like the people, but equally impressive in how they act as ambassadors for book arts.
The first was given by Jean McEwan of Loosely Bound & WUR Brandford. She has a wonderful Scottish accent that scoops you up into her world. She had boundless enthusiasm for both zines and the community she lives in and forms.
The second talk was given by Sam Hasler and Becca Thomas of Yellow Back Books. They both were incredibly modest, and deserve to have some of the spotlight they shine on others in their pop-up artists’ bookshop in Cardiff. It was Sam’s excitement over Sean Edwards, book For Lal, or Henry. This is an interesting idea touching on themes of the unfinished book. It comes in 6 folded parts, numbered, so if you do feel the need to make in one traditional read, you can assemble it in the correct order.
The last talk of the day was given by Meg Beaumont, from KALEID editions. This was an articulate and intelligent talk. And just who you would want to be talking about your work to a collector or a gallery/museum curator. She also has a personable quirk that doesn’t intimidate.
