I share with artist Jez riley French an interest of photography, sound, and books. He makes work that is created through an experimental lens. This is experienced in both his photographs and the sounds he records, and the subject stretches beyond what we can see and hear. The subject may be hinted at, but often the visual noise or the sound recordings are like a mumble. Understanding is not required. He also makes photo books, where the titles of the images directly reference sounds. With the purchase of a book you get a downloadable sonic score to access. It is not clear to me if you are meant to flip the pages at the same time as listening to the sounds, as they don’t necessarily go together. But, you experience the freedom and flexibility that lets you enter and leave his work like the ease of maintaining an old friendship. You can just pick up where you left off, even if you left off on an entirely different page or sound bite.
